If suffering builds character, what about intense suffering?

Was watching an interesting video the other day about why men are generally more developed human beings than women. No offense ladies.
But the crux of the theory is that [attractive] women don’t have as much evolutionary pressure to develop themselves because they’re already high value just because they’re attractive.
Yes, you could say they need to do their hair and makeup, but that’s not nearly as much of a time investment as a man needs to make in his personality, finances, verbal game and overall coolness factor.
Meanwhile, a girl can be dumb as a rock, totally broke, have an annoying voice and will still get courted by 99% of the male population as long as she’s super hot.
Not judging or saying it’s good or bad, and of course there are exceptions blah blah blah. But you get what I’m saying.
Anyway, the question isn’t WHY is it like this, but HOW does it actually play out?
How do men actually develop themselves into cool people?
The rationale given in the video is that negative social feedback is what adds to a person’s value AS LONG AS they’re able to take those experiences and learn from them.
For example, you’ll gain more by starting a business and failing as long as you learn from the experience, than if you just stick at your job and don’t risk failure.
This is basically just a repackaging of “pushing your comfort zone.” Which we all know makes sense logically, but still remains hard to do.
For some reason when I saw this video though, it rang a bell in my head. The premise was that not only is growth impossible without negative experiences, but that those negative experiences are DIRECTLY responsible for the growth in general.
Another classic example is working out: you train your body under more and more intense circumstances, and it adapts.
It’s not comfortable, but if you had just lied in bed and done nothing, you wouldn’t even have the chance to recover to a higher level.

Stalk me here too:
